For every girl, a garter

"There’s something beautiful in showing off things that are meant to be on the inside or underneath.

"A sliver of silk or a frill of lace peeking out from under a skirt, a satin strap slipping off the shoulder, it all suggests the possibility of being undressed, of another layer, and of intimacy.

 "Whether it be emotions, secrets, skin, fears, or a garter, the act of displaying what is meant to be intimate is seductive and decidedly feminine. It’s powerful, inviting, flirtatious, and delicate. In our dress, the effect ranges from daring to innocent to modest. {The last being a sign of the times in the fact that so many women skip the garters or slips.}

"In the home, taking something lovely that is usually kept in the closet or lingerie chest and placing it on the wall or by the window for all to see gives a room a playful, whimsical effect.

"And, in our relationships, the result can be devastatingly beautiful and empowering."

For every girl, a garter

I'm a sucker for a femme fatale. My friend Jessica says it is because I admire strong women. Whether or not that is a correct diagnosis, one of my forever favorite vixens is Poison Ivy.

As I originally saw her - In cartoon form

I'm also have a thing for red heads. Go figure.

Alas, I don't really see any day soon in which it would be acceptable for me to don red waves and/or green leaves.  So I leave it up to you, my internet darlings. Please someone dress up as Poison Ivy. I mean, I already have your garters ready and waiting for you.

Garter pair: Poison Ivy
usually I'd just stop the "For every girl" feature with a garter photo and go about my merry day.  But I love this character so much couldn't resist doing a little costume recon.

I can appreciate a comic book character's traditional leotard and tights uniform, but I think I prefer the skirted renditions.

Amazing interpretation from Megan-Marie.com

Let's take a page from yesterday's post and focus on getting into character all the way to the tips of your fingers.

Even though it's Halloween it's still just a crazy outfit until you put your face on.

I love holidays that let you dress up. And seriously, be Poison Ivy.  She's undeniable.  If you do use the coupon code FemmeFatale at my shop and shipping is free.

For every girl, a garter

For those of you following me on Facebook, you might remember me mentioning how great tattooed brides look in my garters.

And for my blog followers, well, you might remember the well wishes I sent out to NPJ bride Autumn after her April wedding.

After taking a few months to settle into her new, married life, Autumn sent me a few photos of her one-of-a-kind accessory in action! (You can also see the toss garter in her left hand.)

Try to ignore the awesome dress for a second and let's focus on that amazing smile. She looks just beyond happy!  My darlings, this is what they mean when someone says a bride is glowing.

I adore that chunky, bib necklace!  I know Autumn is busy with, you know, life, but I am trying to find out more about that necklace.  The pinwheels garter sort of echoes the bold jewelry, which makes it sort of perfect.

Okay, now I'll let you focus on the dress. I am dying to know more, aren't you?!  And those shoes! Her entire ensemble is so edgy and elegant.  Her dark hair and vivid tattoos heighten the drama even more.

Really, my dears, I could not have asked for a more beautiful bride. How lucky am I?!

Thank you, Autumn, for letting me share your photos.  You are the most to-die-for bride in the history of brides. Ever!

For every girl, a garter

Thanks to my addiction to Pinterest, I recently came across this fabulous flirty, girly dress:

Rendezvous Dress at ModCloth

The ruffles! That color! It instantly brought to mind a garter I designed based on the incredibly specific instructions, "she's pretty girly..."

A garter for a girly girl by Never a Plain Jane

I shouldn't brag, but I think I hit the mark. I also kind of wish that same girly girl would buy that dress to wear with her garter.

For every girl, a garter

Three months ago, Polyvore member mamafolie assembled this amazing outfit:

Green

This week, I got an e-mail from Etsy listing Turquoise+Kelly Green as one of the color combos of the season.

I couldn't agree more.

For every girl, a garter

Several weeks ago one of my high school chums contacted me about making a garter for her cousin. This particular friend is an amazing sewist so you can imagine how flattered I was that she wanted me to make something so special.  And then she made me really sad. She requested a specific design replicating the garters her Noni used to make, adding "I know it's not one of your glamorous garters but my sentimental side caught up with me..."

What! No no no no no! I fear I have been misleading you all this whole time.  Sure, my designs are a little different, but classic is glamorous.  Case in point, check out this gorgeous Perry Estate gown circa 1908:

Hand-embroidered sheer cotton gown

I dare you to tell me that isn't glamorous! Just look at that train! And those sleeves!

And here is the equally classic and glamorous, if I do say so myself, Noni garter by Never a Plain Jane Designs:

Dupioni silk, ivory lace, and double faced satin
And when it comes to underpinnings, please tell me how this could be anything but glamorous!

Anne Francis
And the Noni garter:

Okay, so are we all clear now? Vintage is beautiful, classic is glamorous, and sentiment is Never Plain!

For every girl, a garter

You guys might remember me admiring some of the great mustard items popping up on the wedding and fashion scene back in February. Well, I'm still not over it. It's just such a tasty color! So I hopped on Pinterest to indulge my craving and found these:

Side note: All of these remind me of my friend Kit. I don't necessarily know if she'd wear any of these, but, you guys, that girl is a genius at wearing her clothes. Everything she puts on is chic and brilliant and Kit. It is a talent, I swear.

Anyway. How cute would any of these be for bridesmaids or for just going out dancing?! And to accessorize?

This is the Mellow Yellow Garter by BeauAndArrow  on Etsy. I love this! Wish I'd made it. But, alas, I have so many ideas and only so much time so I thought I'd share some of the other great designers out there making beautiful garters. I don't think I've ever seen grosgrain look so good.

And, is it just me, or are stripes totally making a resurgence in the fashion world?

For every girl, a garter

A week later I am still enamored with the idea of wearing a garter as a visible accessory. After all, I strive to make many of my designs akin to pieces of jewelry.  Let's take this beaded little pretty, for instance.

How sweet would those beads look twinkling under the lights of a dance floor as you floated about in this Elie Saab number?

I love the romantic "thigh's the limit" designs from Mr. Saab's Spring 2010 couture line. So dreamy!

Would you dare to dress a bare leg in a few beads and lace?

For every girl, a garter

Yeah, I know, this post is late. Very late. See I had a very specific idea about the dress I wanted to post today.  I'm sure it is hard to tell, but I am somewhat neurotic. "No!" you say. "Gasp!" you exhale.  But I assure you, my dearests, I am more tightly wound than I may at first seem. But now you can understand how I lost three hours to scouring the internet for the dress I knew I had seen on some website sometime in the last few weeks.

While that one dress remains elusive, my search did yield some pretty fantastic finds. This Marchesa gown in particular caught my eye:

Serafina from the Marchesa Spring 2011 line

Earlier this week I had a client ask for a custom garter based on my Love in Bloom design.  She mentioned that her dress was sheer but that it would be okay if the garter was slightly visible underneath. What fun! I don't know the design of her dress, and even if I did I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise before her big day.

What I do know is that this garter would be so flirtatiously sweet just peeking out rom under the bodice of that Marchesa.

Love Blooms in You garter

I love the idea of pairing such a romantic garter and its innocent pink petals with an almost risque gown.

I love knowing what you think! Would you make that match or are garters meant for bedroom eyes only?

Lady in the Street: For every girl a garter

Thanks, once again, to Pinterest I have discovered my new favorite designer, Karen Millen.

Gasp!

  Swoon!

Thanks to my visiting friend, Hava, I also have a dress and garter pair for you:

Dress: Karen Millen via Pinterest, Garter: Never a Plain Jane

According to Hava, there is nothing better than a chic business outfit hiding a hint of rock star!  I have to agree! I'd love to know my garters were being worn as a reminder to women that they can indeed rule the boardroom.  Of course, no one would ever have to know the secret to their confidence.

For Every Girl, A Garter

I am so in love with today's dress I almost didn't tell you about it.  I mean, what if you buy it and then I get invited to a gala? But, alas, it is fashion perfection and I have the perfect garter for it so...

Vintage, ethereal, elegant - is there really anymore to say. No, but I'll say it anyway. The dress, available at Timeless Vixen Vintage, is a 1950's ivory taffeta cocktail dress with boatneck neckline and drop waist.  The fabric is embroidered with gold roses. Can you imagine!

I think a lot of girls would make this a Grace Kelly dress. But, let's put it on a rockabilly bride, instead. Birdcage veil and feather fascinator,  sky blue finger nails, cherry lips, and blue platform, peep-toe pumps. Of course our girl has some killer swing dance skills; perfect for showing off that shimmering circle skirt. And with every spin, what should we glimpse but a sleek, chic, and never plain garter. This one, made from an upcycled silk necktie, has touches of gold and, you guessed it, sky blue. I'd have her groom wear a matching pocket square.

What say you, darlings? Grace Kelly or Wanda Jackson?

For Every Girl, A Garter

Well kids, we're changing things up a bit. I just wasn't feelin' you feelin' the voting scenarios. I think we can all agree, however, that looking at pretty dresses is fun, fun, fun! So today I have...

This fabulous confection is available through CustomMadeForU, a Chinese family that offers a variety of gorgeous dresses through their Etsy shop. This particular beauty is listed for $1500. Seriously!?

I've paired it with my own confection, the Love in Bloom Garter . I love these together.  All the ruffling, and the pink and cream color combo.  Perfect!

What sort of accessories would you dream up for this fairy tale dress?

For Every Girl, A Garter

I took a little time off from matching garters with dresses so I could expand my inventory.  Now that I've added a few new beauties to my Etsy shop  the games can resume!

Check out this Valentino:
Metis Gown
I can only find the site in Italian so I hope I am giving you good information. I beleive the Metis Gown is part of a line designed by Valentino for Julia Sposa.  If anyone reads Italian and wants to correct me (or add additional info) my feelings will certainly not be hurt.

There is something so chic yet romantic about this dress.  I don't know if it is the lace or that gorgeous bateau neckline. And then those sleeves! So elegant!

If I am ever lucky enough to have a bride pair one of my garters with a Valentino gown, which do you think she should choose?
Something blue featuring vintage ivory lace
An equestrian inspired garter
A garter equal to the dress in romance and elegance
It feels good to be playing our garter game again! I'm excited to hear your thoughts on some of my newer designs and cannot wait to see which you would pick.  Don't forget to tell me why!

For Every Girl, A Garter

Have you been on Pinterest yet?  It is oodles and oodles of fun.  If you ever wonder what wedding dresses are catching my eye, you can sneak a peek here. I "pin" dresses and Pinterest keeps track of the website I found it so I don't have to go back and search.  Yea!

For instance, I found this beauty on Pencil Shavings.
Oscar de la Renta Spring 2011
I have no idea what this dress costs, but I know I want it. I even know which garter I'd pick to wear with it.  How about you?
Something for a southern belle
Lace layered over silk
Classy and classic
Remember to let me know why you chose the garter you did. Would have picked a different garter it it came in a different color or material?  I'd also love to hear what you think of the dress.  It'll be like a gossip session right here.

Last week's winning combo was:

I just love that dress.
